My Phone FAQ

At the My Phone section of windowsphone.com, you can find a lost phone, reinstall apps, edit your Windows Phone Store payment information and more.

Note

Some My Phone features might not be available in your country or region. For more information, see Feature and service availability.

    1. On your computer, open a web browser and go to windowsphone.com.

    2. Point to Explore, then click Sign in. (Note: if you're already signed in to windowsphone.com, you'll see your name, not Explore.)

    3. Sign in using the same Microsoft account you use on your phone.

    4. Point to your name, then do one of the following:

      • To edit your credit card information or your contact info, or to remove your phone from My Phone, click Account settings.
      • To see your phone's information, click My Phone.
      • To find, ring, lock or erase your phone, click Find My Phone.
      • To see your app purchase history or reinstall apps, click Purchase history.
      • To set up or use My Family, click My Family.
  • Find My Phone uses text messaging (SMS) to send commands to your phone in order to find, ring, lock or erase it. Find My Phone can only send 15 text messages per month to your phone. To avoid this limit, you can set your phone to use push notifications instead of SMS. Push notifications can be faster than SMS, and they're not subject to the messaging fees that your mobile service provider might charge for text messages.

For more information about Find My Phone settings, see Finding a lost phone.

    To turn on push notifications

    1. In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon > Find my phone.

    2. Tap Always use push notifications (not SMS) to send commands and apps to my phone.

  • Find My Phone may not work if:

    • Your phone isn't turned on.
    • The battery isn't charged.
    • Your phone doesn't have a mobile data connection.
    • You made a mistake while entering the phone number, or it's not the right one. Make sure that the phone number you've entered can receive text messages, and that you've allowed Microsoft to send text messages to that phone.

    Note

To make any changes to your Find My Phone settings, including the phone number it's tracking and whether you've allowed Microsoft to send text messages to your phone, see the "How do I edit my personal info on My Phone?" section below.

  • Yes, you can. Once you do, you'll no longer be able to buy apps for that phone from the Windows Phone Store or find, ring, lock or erase it in Find My Phone. You also won't be able to use the purchase history page to reinstall apps from the web.

    Warning

If you decide later that you want to add your phone back to My Phone, you'll need to reset it to factory settings, which deletes all of your content and settings.

    To remove a phone

    1. On your computer, open a web browser and go to windowsphone.com.

    2. Point to Explore, then click Sign in. (Note: if you're already signed in to windowsphone.com, you'll see your name, not Explore.)

    3. Sign in using the same Microsoft account you use on your phone.

    4. Point to your name, then click Account settings.

    5. Click Remove, then click Remove again.

    To add a phone again

If you remove your phone from My Phone and then change your mind, you'll have to reset your phone to factory settings before adding it back on windowsphone.com. This will erase all of your personal content, including apps, games, pictures, music and videos.

    1. In the App list, tap SettingsSettings icon > About.

    2. Tap Reset your phone, then, if you're absolutely sure, tap Yes. Your phone will reset.

    3. When you set up your phone again, sign in with a Microsoft account. When you sign in to windowsphone.com with that account, you'll see your phone there.

  • You can edit your Windows Phone Store payment info, update your phone number and change the email address used to send you messages by going to the Account settings page. To edit the name that shows on My Phone, you'll need to change the name associated with the Microsoft account you use to sign in to your phone. You can do this on the Microsoft account website.

    1. On your computer, open a web browser and go to windowsphone.com.

    2. Point to Explore, then click Sign in. (Note: if you're already signed in to windowsphone.com, you'll see your name, not Explore.)
