Typing shortcuts

Your Windows Phone has a bunch of tools to help you type quickly and accurately. Some work quietly behind the scenes, while others pop up discreetly when you need them—like Word Flow, a feature that suggests words and corrects misspellings. Here are some of the ways your phone makes typing easier (plus how to turn them off if you'd rather not use them).

To use Word Flow with shape writing

Shape writing offers a fast, accurate alternative to typical typing on your phone. Glide your finger around the Word Flow keyboard, and words take shape—you can even type with one hand.

Use shape writing to type faster and more accurately

If you have Windows Phone 8.1, you already have shape writing. Start typing a text or email, but glide your finger over the letters on the keyboard to shape words. You’ll see a streak of color following your finger to show the path you’re following. Lift your finger once you’re done, and the word will appear. Start shaping a new word and a space between words will be added automatically.

Prefer standard typing? No problem—type as you normally would and you’ll still get all the benefits of Word Flow, minus shape writing.

To use Word Flow text suggestions

When you start typing, Word Flow suggests words based on the letters you've typed so far. You can tap the suggestion to add it to your message, or keep typing until you see the one you want.

If a suggested word is bold, your phone will use it automatically to replace the typed word. If a suggested word isn't bold, you can tap it to replace the one you've typed. Swipe over to see more suggested words.

If you realize later that you mistyped something, it's not too late. Tap that word and your phone will bring back some suggestions for you.

In Windows Phone 8.1, Word Flow will suggest emoticons (smiley faces and pictures) after related words, so you can show you’re happy, tired, or ready for another slice of pizza without having to leave the letters keyboard.

To add a word to the text suggestion dictionary

If you'd like the phone to recognize a particular word in the future, type the word, tap it, and then tap the plus sign (+) next to the word in the suggestion bar.

You can delete all the words you've added to the dictionary by resetting text suggestions. In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon > Keyboard > Advanced, and then tap Reset suggestions.

To quickly add a period

Tap Space twice to add a period and a space, and to capitalize the first letter of the next sentence.

Automatic corrections and shortcuts

Here are some corrections that Word Flow will automatically make for you as you type:

  • Add apostrophes to many contractions. For example, "dont" will be replaced with "don't."
  • Capitalize the first letter of a new sentence. When you type a period (or two spaces, which adds a period and a space for you), your phone will automatically capitalize the next letter for you.
  • Add accents to words that commonly use them. For example, if you type "fiancee," it'll change the word to "fiancée."
  • Capitalize proper nouns. Your phone recognizes many names, places, and other things that should be capitalized, and does it for you.

To turn off text suggestions and automatic corrections

If you don't want to use some (or any) of the shortcuts in this topic, you can turn them off in Settings.

  1. In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon, and then tap Keyboard.

  2. Tap the keyboard language you want to change, and then clear any settings you don't want to use.
