Wallet FAQ

  • Wallet is a secure place for you to store digital versions of cards, coupons, Windows Store and Xbox gift cards, and more—the same stuff you'd keep in your actual wallet. Here's a list of things you can store in your Wallet, and what you can do with them:

    • Credit or debit cards – Purchase apps and games in the Windows Phone Store, or simply keep track of your card account info. And if your service provider and phone support it, you can even set up credit or debit cards to make NFC purchases in stores. (This requires a special, secure SIM card.)
    • Windows Store and Xbox gift cards – Redeem your Windows Store and Xbox gift cards, then spend them on apps and games in the Windows Phone Store. (You can also use them in the Windows Store and select Xbox stores.)
    • Loyalty cards – Show and scan your loyalty cards at the grocery store, your favorite restaurant, and more.
    • Membership cards – Check out books at the library, check in at the gym, and more.
    • Coupons – Browse for deals using Bing, or manually enter coupon codes and other info.
  • There are a few ways to do this:

    • Sign in with your Microsoft account – If you've ever purchased anything on an Xbox 360 or Windows Phone, then you may already have a card associated with your Microsoft account. All you need to do is sign in with the same Microsoft account on your Windows Phone 8, and your card will show up in your Wallet shortly after.
    • Install an app – If your bank (or card issuer) has an app that's compatible with Wallet for Windows Phone, you can install that app. Then, when you open the app and sign in, your card will be added to Wallet. This will give you access to your account info (such as balances and transaction history) directly from your Wallet.
    • Add them manually – On the All pane in your Wallet, tap Add Add icon, and then follow the instructions to add a card manually. If there's an app that can be linked to your card, we'll attempt to find it and ask you if you want to install it.

  • There are a couple ways to redeem a Windows Phone gift card—you can do it through Wallet on your Windows Phone 8, or you can use your web browser. To learn how, see Add cards and deals to Wallet.

    Once you've redeemed your gift card, you can spend the balance on apps, games, and more in the Windows Phone Store, Windows Store, and select Xbox stores.

  • No. Gift cards can't be used on phones earlier than Windows Phone 8.

  • A Wallet PIN is a numeric password that you can set up to protect access to your Wallet. The PIN can also prevent unwanted NFC payments and protect your purchases in the Windows Phone Store.

    Your Wallet PIN is different from your lock screen password. When you set up a Wallet PIN, be sure to choose something you'll remember—particularly if you don't think you'll use it very often.

    Setting up a Wallet PIN is not required, but it is recommended. Here's how to do it:

    1. In the App list, tap Wallet Wallet icon.

    2. Tap More More icon, and then tap Settings+PIN.

    3. Turn on the Wallet PIN switch Toggle switch, enter and confirm your new PIN (it must be at least 4 digits), and then tap Done.

    4. If you'd like to require this PIN for purchases in the Windows Phone Store, select the Use Wallet PIN to protect music, app, and in-app purchases check box.

    Note

    • If you're having trouble remembering your Wallet PIN, you can try to enter it three times. If you enter it incorrectly three times, you'll temporarily lose access to your Wallet. If this happens, just wait a little while, then try again. If you need to reset your Wallet PIN, you'll need to reset your phone to its factory settings.
  • NFC stands for near field communication, a technology that allows two devices to "talk" to each other wirelessly at close range. Here are some of the ways you can use NFC with Windows Phone 8:

    • To share photos and more – Tap your phone to another NFC-capable device to quickly share photos, contacts, web addresses, and other things. To learn how, see Tap to share photos, websites, and more.
    • To pair with another device – Tap your phone to an NFC-capable accessory (such as a pair of speakers or headphones) to pair it with your phone for Bluetooth communication.
    • To make payments and other transactions – If your phone and mobile operator support it, you can set up credit or debit cards to pay for things in stores that offer this service.
  • While every Windows Phone 8 has a Wallet Hub, not all support NFC transactions. The easiest way to check and see if your phone supports NFC transactions is to go to your Wallet settings. In Wallet, tap More More icon, and then tap Settings+PIN. If you don't see an option to turn on "NFC transactions," then your phone doesn't support it.

    At the moment, only a small number of mobile operators offer phones that support this feature. However, we're working hard to get additional mobile operators on board, and we expect the number of Windows Phones that support NFC transactions to grow.

  • Fast Cards are a way for you to make NFC transactions quickly—exactly how quickly is up to you. If you have a card that you use often, you can set it up as a Fast Card. Then, in Wallet settings, you can change how easily you want to be able to access that card. For example, if you want to be able to tap an NFC reader to pay for something even when your phone is locked, you can change the Fast Card settings to do just that. You can also change the settings to allow NFC payments only when the phone is unlocked, or only when the Wallet is open.

    Fast Cards only work with phones that support NFC transactions. If your phone and mobile operator do not, you won't see any Fast Cards options in Wallet or Settings.

  • Payment cards that are set up on your Microsoft account for app and music purchases can't be deleted directly from your phone. If you see an "Additional action required" error after trying to delete a card, try the following:

    1. Go to https://commerce.microsoft.com and sign in using the same Microsoft account you use on your phone.

    2. Click Payment options, and then click the card you want to delete.

    3. Click Remove, and then follow the instructions to delete your card.

    4. Go back to your phone. In Wallet, tap More More icon, and then tap Refresh.

      This will sync your Wallet cards with your Microsoft account. When it's finished, you'll see "Attention required" near the card in your Wallet.

    5. Tap and hold the card, and then tap Delete.
