Create, edit, or delete a contact

When you set up more than one account on your phone (such as Facebook or Outlook), all the contacts or friends from those accounts will show up as contacts in People. For some accounts, you can create new contacts, edit existing ones, or delete the ones you don't want to see, right on your phone.

Contact profile

Note

When you set up a Google email account on your phone, the contacts might not sync to your phone, depending on what version of the Windows Phone 7 software your phone has installed. For more information, see Sync Google email, contacts, and calendars FAQ.

To create a new contact

  1. On Start, tap People PeopleTile.

  2. Flick to All, and then tap New New icon.

  3. Tap New contact.

  4. Tap the account you want to create the contact in.

  5. Do any of the following:

    • Tap Name to add your contact's name, company, and other personal information. When you're finished, tap SaveSave icon.
    • Tap Phone to add a work, home, or mobile number, and then tap SaveSave icon.
    • Tap Email to add an email address, and then tap Save Save icon.
    • To change the ringtone you'll hear when this person calls you, tap Ringtone. Tap Play Play icon to preview a ringtone, tap the name to assign it to this contact, and then tap SaveSave icon. To learn more, including how to add a custom ringtone, see Ringtones, sounds, and volumes.
    • To add more details, including an address, website, birthday, or notes, tap Other.
    • To add a picture to a contact, tap Add photo and then follow the instructions.
  6. When you're finished adding information, tap Save Save icon.

Tip

  • If you need to create a large number of contacts from scratch, it might be easier to type them into Windows Live on your computer. Then, when you set up your Windows Live account on your phone, your contacts will automatically sync between your phone and Windows Live.

To edit a contact

You can add or change information for a contact. If you're editing a linked contact, you can choose which account you want to store the changes in.

  1. On Start, tap People People tile.

  2. Flick to All, find and tap the contact you want to edit, and then tap Edit Edit icon.

  3. If this is a linked contact (a contact with multiple accounts that show up as one contact card), tap the account you want to edit (for example, tap Edit Windows Live).

  4. Do one of the following:

    • To edit an existing field, tap it, update the information, and then tap Save Save icon.
    • To add a new field, tap Add Add icon, enter the new information, and then tap Save Save icon.

To delete a contact

While you can't delete a Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn contact on your phone, you can delete contacts from other services. When you do this, the contact will be deleted both from your phone and from the online service where it's stored.

  1. On Start, tap People People tile.

  2. Flick to All, then find and tap the contact you want to delete.

  3. Tap More More icon, and then tap Delete.

  4. If the contact is a linked contact, one contact card with multiple accounts associated with it, you'll need to tap the account you want to remove from that contact.

For more information about linked contacts, see Link two or more contacts.

  5. Tap Delete.

Notes

  • If you have lots of friends and contacts from multiple accounts, see Find and filter my contacts for tips on navigating your contacts list.
  • You can't create or edit contacts from Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn from your phone. But you can add information to their contact cards, then save it to a different account (such as Windows Live). For more information, see Social networking on my phone FAQ and Add a picture to a contact.
  • You can't move or copy contacts between services (such as Hotmail and Outlook) on your phone. See How do I get contacts onto my phone? to learn more about getting your contacts from various places onto your phone.
  • Contacts are synced between your phone and some online services (like Outlook and Hotmail). If you change a contact on your phone, that contact is also changed in the online service, and vice versa.
