Use a PIN to lock my SIM card

You can use a PIN for the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card in your phone to prevent people from making unauthorized phone calls. After turning on SIM security, you'll be prompted to enter your SIM PIN each time you start your phone. Depending on your mobile operator, your phone may not have a SIM card.

Notes

  • Tap the top of the screen to show the status bar, which has icons that tell a lot about your phone—including information about your SIM card. Some of these icons indicate that your SIM card is missing ( SIM card missing icon) or locked ( SIM card locked icon). See What do the icons on my phone mean? for more information about these icons and others that might appear on the status bar.
  • Emergency phone calls can still be made without entering the PIN.
  • To make and receive phone calls, you must have an account with a mobile operator, as well as a cellular signal in your current location.

To turn on SIM security

  1. On Start, tap Phone Phone tile > More More icon > Call settings.

  2. Turn on SIM security.

  3. When prompted to Enter SIM PIN, enter the PIN for your SIM card by doing one of the following:

    • If this is the first time a PIN has been set for the SIM card in your phone, try typing 1234, and then tap Enter. 1234 is a common default PIN for some SIM cards. If that PIN doesn't work, contact your mobile operator for the correct default PIN.
    • If you previously set a PIN for the SIM card in your phone (even if the SIM card was in another phone when you did it), type your PIN, and then tap Enter. The message SIM PIN enabled displays briefly.

To change the PIN for your SIM card

  1. On Start, tap Phone Phone tile > More More icon > Call settings.

  2. With SIM security turned on, tap Change SIM PIN.

  3. When prompted to Enter current SIM PIN, type the current PIN, and then tap Enter.

  4. When prompted to Enter new SIM PIN, type a new PIN, and then tap Enter.

  5. When prompted to Confirm new SIM PIN, type the new PIN again, and then tap Enter.

The message SIM PIN changed displays briefly.

To enter your SIM PIN

  1. Turn on or restart your phone after SIM security has been turned on.

  2. When prompted to Enter SIM PIN, type your PIN, and then tap Enter.

Warning

If an incorrect PIN is entered too many times, the SIM card will be blocked by your mobile operator. If this occurs, you'll need to contact your mobile operator for a PIN Unblocking Key (PUK) code. If an incorrect PUK code is entered too many times, your SIM card will be permanently blocked, and you'll need to get a new SIM card from your mobile operator.
