Feature and service availability

Windows Phone feature and service experiences can vary depending on a variety of factors, including your language, locale, mobile operator, hardware manufacturer, phone model, and operating system version. This article describes some of the primary experience differences you might encounter. This is not a comprehensive list of every feature or service that might differ and this list might change without notice.

Languages

Display. The following display languages are supported: Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (UK and US), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. The specific display languages that are included in your phone are chosen by your mobile operator or phone manufacturer.

On-screen keyboard. The following on-screen keyboard languages are supported: Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (UK and US), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian. These input languages are available on all phones, regardless of which display languages your mobile operator or phone manufacturer chose to include.

Text suggestions. The following on-screen keyboard languages also support text suggestions: Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Danish, Dutch, English (UK and US), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Russian, Spanish, and Swedish.

Apps

App purchase. You can buy apps in the following countries/regions: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States. App availability, prices, and supported languages vary by country/region.

Music, videos, and podcasts

In some countries/regions, you can access music, videos, and podcasts from Zune Marketplace. Depending on your country/region, you might be able to do some or all of the following:

  • Buy music
  • Rent music with an Xbox Music Pass subscription (only available in Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States)
  • Buy or rent videos through Zune software on your PC
  • Download podcasts
  • Use Smart DJ (only available in Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States)

Search

Bing search. Bing search (accessed from the phone's hardware Search button) is available in the following countries/regions: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States. In some cases, phone manufacturers and mobile operators can configure the hardware Search button to a locally-relevant search site.

Local search. Local search results (which appear as a pivot in Bing search results) are available in the following countries/regions: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, United Kingdom, and United States.

Image search. Image search results (which appear as a pivot in Bing search results) are available in the following countries/regions: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States.

Music search. Music search results are available in the following countries/regions: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States.

Vision search. Vision search results are available in the following countries/regions: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States.

Voice search. Voice search results are available in the following countries/regions: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States.

Maps

Maps. Maps are available in the following countries/regions: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

Local Scout. Local Scout (a feature accessible from the Start screen, Bing search, and Maps) is available in the following countries/regions: Australia, France, United Kingdom, and United States (English).

Traffic. Traffic information from Bing is available only in the United States (English).

Speech

Find and Search. The "Find" and "Search" speech commands (used for searching the web with your voice) are available in the following countries/regions: France, Germany, United Kingdom, and United States.

Open and Start. The "Open" and "Start" speech commands (used for starting an app with your voice) are available in the following countries/regions: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States.

Call. The "Call" speech command (used for calling someone from your contact list or for dialing a phone number) is available in the following countries/regions: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States.

Voice-to-text. You can use your voice to dictate text messages in the following countries/regions: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States.

Networking

Wi-Fi. Your mobile operator or hardware manufacturer can choose not to include support for Wi-Fi networking. For more info, see Connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Internet connection sharing. Your mobile operator or hardware manufacturer can choose not to include support for Internet connection sharing. For more info, see Share my connection.

Bluetooth. Your mobile operator or hardware manufacturer can choose not to include support for Bluetooth. For more info, see Pair my phone with a Bluetooth accessory.

Other

Memory (RAM). App selection and features might be limited on phones that have 256MB of system memory (RAM). To find out if your phone has 256MB of memory, on Start, flick left, tap Settings, tap About, and look for a note indicating that your phone has 256MB of memory.

Xbox LIVE service. For a list of countries/regions where the Xbox LIVE service is supported, see xbox.com.

Visual voicemail. Visual voicemail isn't available for all mobile operators. For more info, see Check my voicemail.

Group text messaging. Your mobile operator or hardware manufacturer can choose how to configure this feature. For more information, see Send a message.

Camera focus. Your mobile operator or hardware manufacturer can choose not to support custom focus (the ability to focus on the point you tap). For more information, see Take a picture or record a video.

TTY. Your mobile operator or hardware manufacturer can choose not to include support for TTY (also known as a teletypewriter, text telephone, or a telecommunication device for the deaf). For more info, see Use my phone with a TTY.

Tap a phone number. In some countries/regions, you can tap a phone number in text to dial that number.

Notes

  • Some of the features and services described above require the most recent version of Windows Phone. If your phone doesn't already have the most recent version of Windows Phone software, you might be able to install it. To learn more, see Phone updates FAQ.
