Synchronising and getting updates with your Mac

The Windows Phone application for Mac (formerly the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac) is the tool you need to sync your favourite music, photos, videos, films, TV programmes and podcasts from your Mac with your Windows Phone. You can also copy files from your phone to your Mac, update your Windows Phone software and restore your phone to a backup.

The Windows Phone application is available in the Mac App Store.

To sync music, pictures, videos and podcasts

  1. Connect your Windows Phone to your Mac using the USB cable that came with your phone.

  2. In the left pane, click the type of media that you want to sync (Music, Photos & Videos, Films & TV Programmes or Podcasts), then do one of the following:

    • To sync music, select the Sync music from iTunes library checkbox.
    • To sync photos and videos, select the Sync photos and videos from iPhoto library or the Sync photos and videos from the Aperture library checkbox (depending on which library you're using). To include videos too, select the Include videos checkbox as well.
    • To sync films and TV programmes, select the Sync films and TV programmes from iTunes library checkbox.
    • To sync podcasts, select the Sync podcasts from iTunes library checkbox.
  3. Select the files that you want to sync, then click Sync.

    Notes

    • Protected media files (such as protected MPEG-4 files) in your iTunes libraries can't be synchronised.
    • To add a file to your phone manually (rather than synchronising it), drag it from the Finder to the phone icon in the Sidebar and drop it there.
    • If the Windows Phone app doesn't recognise your phone when you connect it, try unplugging it and connecting it again. If that still doesn't work, press and hold the Power button on your phone and swipe down to turn off the phone, then turn it on again. That should fix it.

To add ringtones to your phone

The Windows Phone application identifies the music files that will work as ringtones so you can use them on your phone. To learn how to work with them once they're on your phone, see Ringtones, sounds and volume.

  1. Connect your Windows Phone to your Mac using the USB cable that came with your phone.

  2. In the Sidebar, click Ringtones.

  3. Select the files you want to add, then click Send to Phone.

To copy files from your phone to your Mac

You can select individual files on your phone to copy (or import) to your Mac. For example, if you took a picture or a video on your phone, you can import it directly into iPhoto or Aperture on your Mac.

  1. Connect your Windows Phone to your Mac using the USB cable that came with your phone.

  2. In the Sidebar, click Browse Device, then select the files you want to copy. (You can hold Shift or Command to select multiple files.)

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Click Import Selected Items to copy the files to the corresponding library on your Mac.
    • Drag and drop the files to your Desktop or to a specific folder.

To update your Windows Phone 7 software

You can install updates to your phone with the Windows Phone application for Mac. If an update is available, you'll be notified when you connect your phone to your Mac and start the application.

  1. Connect your Windows Phone to your Mac using the USB cable that came with your phone.

  2. In the left pane, click the device name (don't click the media type).

  3. Click Install Updates.

To sync your phone with more than one Mac

It's possible to sync your Windows Phone with multiple computers. You can sync media files from multiple PCs and Macs, but you can only manage your media files on the computer the files originated from.

  1. Using the USB cable that came with your Windows Phone, connect your phone to a different Mac to the one you originally synchronised with.

  2. Click Enable Sync, then follow the instructions above for synchronising media files.

To restore a backup to your phone

When you update your phone using the Windows Phone application for Mac, we'll automatically back up your phone software and settings for safekeeping. If your phone has problems after an update, you can restore it to its pre-update version and state. For more information about how this works, see Restoring a backup to your phone.

  1. Connect your Windows Phone to your Mac using the USB cable that came with your phone.

  2. In the left pane, click the name of your phone, then click Device Options.

  3. Click Restore, then follow the instructions to restore your phone to the most recent backup. (If the Restore button is unavailable, it probably means that there is no backup available for this phone.)
