New phone?

Sign in with a Microsoft account

To get apps in the Windows Phone Store, get your Xbox gamerscore and avatar, use Xbox Music, get Twitter and LinkedIn feeds in your People Hub, use Facebook chat, back up your phone settings, and more, you need to sign in to your Windows Phone with a Microsoft account (formerly Windows Live ID).

If you don't have a Microsoft account, you can create one when you first set up your phone, or you can create one later. The same is true if you already have Microsoft account—you can sign in with it when you first set up your phone, or you can sign in later. (See What is a Microsoft account? if you're not sure whether you have an account or not.)

Notes

  • Have more than one Microsoft account? You'll need to decide which is the best one to use on your phone. Once you sign in on your phone, you can't change the account without resetting your phone, which would delete everything you haven't backed up. So it's important to pick the right one. See Choose a Microsoft account wizard (English only) and Which Microsoft account should I use? for help deciding.
  • If you've set up two-step verification for your Microsoft account and you have questions about how to sign in to your Windows Phone, see App passwords and two-step verification for answers.

To create a Microsoft account

You can create a Microsoft account when you first set up your phone. (To create a Microsoft account after you've set up your phone, go to the Microsoft account sign-in website and follow the instructions.)

  1. Follow the setup instructions on your phone until you get to the Keep your life in sync page.

  2. Tap Create one, and then follow the instructions.

Once you've finished this step, you're signed in on your phone.
