Create and edit my contacts

When you set up accounts (like Google or Outlook) on your Windows Phone, all the contacts or friends from those accounts will show up as contacts in your People Hub. You can create new contacts, edit existing ones, or delete the ones you don't need anymore.

New contact on Windows Phone

Creating contacts

Creating contacts works differently depending on whether you have Windows Phone 8.1 or Windows Phone 8. Find out which version you have

To create a new contact in Windows Phone 8.1

  1. On Start Start icon, tap People People icon.

  2. Swipe over to Contacts, and then tap New New icon.

  3. If you have more than one account on your phone, you'll have a chance to choose which one to save the contact in. Do one of the following:

    • If this is the first time you've created a contact, tap the account you want to use. This will be your default account—where your new contacts will be saved from now on.
    • If this isn't your first new contact, you can change the default account and save the contact to a different account. Just tap Save to, then choose the account you want. This will be your new default account, until you change it again.
  4. To create a quick contact with just the basics, do one or more of the following:

    • Tap the Name box and type your contact's first and last name, or just their first name—you can always add a last name later.
    • Tap the Mobile phone box and type the phone number.
    • Tap the Personal email box and type the email address.
  5. If you want to add more details, do any of the following:

    Note

You can also add any of these details later, by editing the contact.

    • To add a company, middle name, nickname, title, suffix, or last name (if you didn't type it already), tap the plus sign Plus icon in the Name text box. Add the information you want, and then tap Done Done icon.
    • To add another phone number, tap Phone, tap the type of number you want to add, and then type the number. To add more numbers, tap Phone again and repeat the steps.
    • To add another email address, tap Email, tap the type of email you want to add, and then type the address. To add more email addresses, tap Email again and repeat the steps.
    • To change the ringtone or text tone you hear when this person calls you, tap Ringtone or Text tone. Tap Play Play icon to preview a tone, and tap the name of the tone to associate it with this contact.
    • To add other information, such as a street address, birthday, significant other, and more, tap Other.
    • To add a profile picture to a contact, tap Add photo.
  6. Tap Save Save icon.

Notes

  • If you add a contact without a phone number, it might be filtered from your contact list. You'll still be able to find it by searching. To change which contacts are filtered, just tap Showing at the top of your contact list.
  • Want to see your Facebook friends in your contact list and Facebook updates in your People Hub? See Set up the Facebook app.

  3. If this is a linked contact—a contact with multiple accounts that show up as one contact card—tap the account you want to edit.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • To edit existing info such as the name, phone number, or email address, tap it and make your changes. Then tap Save Save icon.
    • To add new info, such as a phone number or email address, tap the plus sign Plus icon next to the info you want to add, add the info, and then tap Save Save icon.
    • To edit or add a company, middle name, nickname, title, suffix, or to add a last name if the contact doesn't include one already, tap the plus sign Plus icon in the Name box, tap the field you want to edit, and then tap Done Done icon.

    • To add new info, tap the plus sign Add icon next to the item you want to add, enter the new information, and then tap Save Save icon.

Notes

  • You can't move or copy contacts between services (such as Google and Outlook) on your phone. See Import contacts onto my new phone to learn more about getting your contacts from various places onto your phone.
  • Contacts are synced between your phone and online services like Outlook.com or Google. If you change a contact on your phone, that contact is also changed in the online service, and vice versa.
  • You can't create or edit contacts from social networks like Facebook or Twitter using your phone. However, you can add information to a contact card for one of those services, then save it to a different account (such as Outlook.com). To get started, open the contact and then tap Edit Edit icon. In the Add details box, tap Add.

Deleting contacts

Deleting contacts works the same in Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.

To delete a contact in Windows Phone 8.1 or Windows Phone 8

  1. On Start Start icon, tap People People icon.

  2. Tap the contact you want to delete.

  3. Tap More More icon, and then tap Delete.

  4. If the contact is a linked contact—one contact card with multiple accounts associated with it—you'll need to tap the account from which you want to delete the contact.

  5. Tap Delete.

Notes

  • You can't delete contacts from social networks like Facebook or Twitter using your phone, so you won't see those accounts as choices when deleting a linked contact.
  • For a quicker way to delete a contact, tap and hold it in your contact list, then tap Delete.
