What suggestions will I see on my Windows Phone 8?

When you connect your Microsoft and Facebook accounts to Bing on your Windows Phone 8, we can give you personalized suggestions for things you might like in Local Scout, Music + Videos, the Windows Phone Store, and Search.

This topic is about Windows Phone 8. If your phone is running Windows Phone 8.1, see Get suggestions in the Store FAQ.

  • If you connect your Microsoft account to Bing, we'll be able to get a sense of your tastes and preferences based on the things you do on your phone or in other places where you sign in with the same Microsoft account, like Xbox Music or Bing. For example, if you often search for pizza places (whenever you've signed in to Bing), we can suggest ones in Local Scout that are nearby, or that are offering a deal. Or if you get directions several times to the same venue, we can suggest upcoming events at that venue.

If you also connect your Facebook account, we can factor in the things that you or your friends have liked and places where you or your friends have checked in. For example, if six of your friends like a particular singer on Facebook, we can suggest a nearby venue if that singer will be playing there, or recommend that you check out that singer's music in Music + Videos.

  • Nope. We won't post anything to your Facebook wall or share your information with anyone (including Facebook).

  • We only note where you are so we can recommend things that are close by. Don't worry, we won't share your location with anyone else.

    1. Press the Search button Search buttton icon, and then tap More More icon > Settings.

    2. Tap Suggestions.

    3. Turn suggestions On Toggle On icon.

Once you've logged into your Facebook account, you can connect it to Bing and get recommendations based on your interests as well as your friends'. In the Store settings, tap Facebook and tap OK when prompted. If you change your mind about Facebook suggestions, tap and hold Facebook, then tap Remove Facebook suggestions.

  • Once you set up suggestions, press the Search button Search buttton icon, tap Scout Local Scout icon, and then flick to For you.

You'll see suggestions for all sorts of things, including:

    • Places, such as parks, concert venues, fairgrounds, museums, and other attractions.
    • Events, such as concerts, festivals, lectures, readings, and other performances.
    • Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, dessert places, and other places to eat and drink.
    • Deals and coupons.
  • This is where you come in! You can tell us when any suggestion doesn't hit the mark, and we'll remove it from the list. The more you tell us, the more we can learn your tastes, and your suggestions will get more accurate.

    To remove a suggestion

    1. In Local Scout, flick to For you.

    2. Tap Refine Refine icon.

    3. Check the items that don't match your tastes, and then tap Dislike Dislike icon.

  • There are three places to see suggestions in Search: in local results, in Quick cards, and in App Connect.

    • Local results. To see local results, search for something, and then flick to Local. You'll be able to see if something is popular, or if you connect Facebook, you'll see if any of your friends like something that comes up.
    • Quick cards. If a search turns up a quick result, tap it to see suggestions. For example, searching for a movie might bring up movie times that appear before web search results. If you connect Facebook, we'll also show you if your friends have liked or reviewed anything.
    • App Connect. With suggestions turned on, we'll show you popular apps related to your search. If you connect Facebook, we'll also show apps related to your search that your friends have liked, or that are similar.
    1. Press the Search button Search buttton icon, and then tap More More icon > Settings.

    2. Tap Suggestions.

    3. Turn suggestions Off Toggle Off icon.
