Email + calendar

Setting up or deleting an email account

Some email accounts include not just emails, but contacts, calendars, tasks and other features that may also appear on your Windows Phone when you add the account. You can add as many accounts as you like, but you should pay extra attention to which Microsoft email account you set up first.

Note

If your contacts are stored in Outlook (the Office program, not Outlook.com) on your PC, you may need to import them into a Microsoft account or another online service before you can sync them to your phone. To learn more, see Importing contacts onto your new phone.

To set up the first Microsoft account on your phone

The first Microsoft account you add will be the one you use to get apps, get your Xbox gamerscore and avatar, play Xbox Music and do any of the other things on your phone that require a Microsoft account. It's important to enter the right Microsoft account the first time you sign in so you can get the Microsoft benefits you care about most. See Microsoft account wizard (US English only) or Which Microsoft account should I use? to get help in deciding which to use if you have more than one.

  1. In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon, then tap Email + accounts.

  2. Tap Add an account > Microsoft account > Sign in.

  3. Enter the email address and password for the Microsoft account you'd like to use on your phone, then tap Next.

    Notes

    • Once you've added a Microsoft account on your phone, there's no way of changing it without resetting your phone. So you should pick the best one for you. See Which Microsoft account should I use? if you need help deciding.
    • If you set up any other Hotmail, Live.com or Outlook.com accounts on your phone, photos in those accounts won't be synchronised to your phone, and you won't be able to use those accounts to play Xbox games or use Xbox Music.
  4. If two-step verification is set up for your Microsoft account, you may be asked to verify your identity before you can continue. Follow the instructions to get a code. See Why is Microsoft texting me? to learn more.

  5. If you want to back up photos, text messages, phone settings and app data to the cloud, tap Yes.

Your Microsoft account emails, contacts, calendar, photos, feeds and synchronised passwords will be synchronised on your phone, and a Tile will be added to Start for emails. If you don't use this account for emails, you can always unpin the Tile.

To set up an Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com account

Once you've set up your first Microsoft account, you can add others to get emails, contacts and calendars from those accounts on your phone.

  1. In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon, then tap Email + accounts.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If you have Windows Phone 8, tap Add an account > Outlook.
    • If you have Windows Phone 8.1, tap Add an account > Outlook.com > Connect.

    Note

If you can't see an Outlook or Outlook.com option, it just means you haven't signed in with a Microsoft account on your phone yet. To do that, follow the instructions in the first section, above.

  3. Enter your email address and password, then tap Sign in.

  4. If two-step verification is set up for this account, you may be asked to verify your identity before you can continue. Follow the instructions to get a code. See Why is Microsoft texting me? to learn more.

  1. In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon, then tap Email + accounts.

  2. Tap Add an account > Exchange.

  5. If the correct settings still can't be found, tap Advanced, do the following, then tap Sign in:

    • In the Server box, type the server address. This is the web address that you use to access your emails in a web browser using Outlook Web App. If you don't know the address, you can search Help in Outlook for instructions or ask your company's support person.
    • Tap Show all settings, then make sure that the Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection setting is correct. If you're not sure, ask your company's support person.
  6. If your company offers Lync and you don't already have the Lync app on your phone, you'll be asked if you want to download the app from the Store.

  7. If the Create a new password message appears after a few moments, do the following:

    1. Tap Set, then enter a password that meets the security requirements in the New password box.
    2. Tap the Confirm password box and type the same password, then tap Done.
