What do the icons on my phone mean?

Tap the top of your phone's screen to instantly get information about network connectivity, signal strength, battery power, time and much more.

The status bar also appears momentarily when things change on your phone, so you get relevant information about your phone. For example, if your battery is running low, the low battery icon will appear on the status bar.

The following picture shows the order of the icons on the status bar.

No signal because your phone isn't connected to a mobile network.

Flight mode icon

Your phone is in Flight mode. Mobile, WiFi, FM radio, Bluetooth and NFC sharing are all turned off simultaneously when you turn Flight mode on. (You can still turn on WiFi, FM radio, Bluetooth and NFC sharing separately.)

SIM card missing icon

SIM card is missing.

SIM card locked icon

SIM card is locked. For more info, see Using a PIN to lock your SIM card.

Notes

  • The mobile data connection icons and types of connections they represent can vary by mobile operator.
  • The 4G icon icon may be used for a variety of mobile data connections, including LTE and HSPA+.
  • For an LTE connection, you might see an LTE icon icon instead of an LTE icon or 4G icon icon.
  • When your mobile data connection is being used to transfer data, you may see the Mobile data used icon icon, depending on your mobile operator. This icon only appears on phones that have Windows Phone software version 8.0.10501.127 or later. See How do I update my phone software? for more info on updating your phone.

Call forwarding

The Call forwarding ( Call forwarding icon) icon appears when call forwarding is turned on. To learn how to forward calls, see Calling options.

Roaming

The Roaming ( Roaming icon) icon lets you know that your phone is roaming and not using your home mobile network.

Notes

  • The Roaming (Roaming icon) icon might look different on your phone and can vary according to mobile operator.
  • Depending on your mobile operator, you might see this icon (Domestic roaming icon) when your phone is roaming domestically.

WiFi connection

Very high WiFi icon

Connected to a WiFi network. The icon is animated when your phone is trying to connect to a WiFi network. For info about setting up a WiFi connection, see Connecting to a WiFi network.

WiFi not connected icon

WiFi is turned on, but your phone isn't connected to a WiFi network.

Internet sharing icon

Mobile data connection is shared with other devices over WiFi. For more info, see Sharing your connection.

WiFi used icon

WiFi connection is being used to transfer data. Depending on your mobile operator, you might not see this icon when a WiFi connection is being used to transfer data. This icon only appears on phones that have Windows Phone software version 8.0.10501.127 or later. See How do I update my phone software? for more info on updating your phone.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth icon

Connected to a Bluetooth device.

Not connected to Bluetooth device icon

Bluetooth is turned on, but your phone isn't connected to a Bluetooth device.

Driving Mode

The Driving Mode ( Driving Mode icon) icon appears when Driving Mode is turned on. For more info, see Using Driving Mode.

To use Driving Mode, your phone needs to have Windows Phone software version 8.0.10501.127 or later. See How do I update my phone software? for more information on updating your phone.

Ringer

Vibrate mode icon

Ringer is set to vibrate.

Silent icon

Ringer is set to silent.

Location

The Location ( Location icon) icon appears when an app is accessing your phone's current location information. For more info about location awareness and services, see Location awareness and your phone.

Battery

Battery charging icon

Battery is charging.

Plugged in fully charged icon

Phone is plugged in and battery is fully charged.

Full battery icon

Full battery power

High battery icon

High battery power

Medium battery icon

Medium battery power

Low battery icon

Low battery power

Critically low battery icon

Critically low battery power – battery needs to be charged.

Unknown battery state

Battery power or state of the battery isn't currently known.

Battery Saver icon

Battery Saver is on.

Clock

The clock displays the current time.
