New phone?

Connecting to a WiFi Network

Wherever there is a WiFi network, you can use your Windows Phone to connect to it, in addition to connecting to a mobile network. You'll probably prefer a WiFi connection because it's typically faster than your mobile data connection. It can also save on costs if you're not on an unlimited data plan or if you can't connect to your mobile network for some reason. Some WiFi networks are secured and may require a password before you can connect to the network.

To connect to a WiFi network

  1. On Start, flick left to the Application list, then press Settings Settings icon > WiFi.

  2. Make sure that WiFi networking is set to On Toggle control icon.

This ensures that your phone is actively searching for available WiFi networks. If a network is found, your phone will list it here and let you know whether it's an open or secured network.

  3. Press the network you want to connect to.

Tips

  • Depending on how your phone is set up by your phone manufacturer or mobile operator, you'll be notified periodically when there are available WiFi networks in your area. You can tap the notification to connect to the network, or to turn off notifications. If you don't want to be notified when a WiFi network is available, return to Settings Settings icon > WiFi and clear the Notify me when new networks are found checkbox. When notifications are turned off, you can still check for WiFi networks by returning to SettingsSettings icon > WiFi.
  • If there aren't any WiFi networks listed when you're somewhere that you expect one or more to appear, turn WiFi networking off, then turn it back on.
  • Some phones might not support WiFi, so WiFi network settings might not be visible.
  • If you want to connect to a secured network, you might have to enter a username and a password. If so, press Done when you're finished.
  • Some WiFi networks, such as ones you might find in coffee shops, restaurants, hotels or elsewhere, may require you to enter a password in your web browser before you can connect.
  • To disconnect from a network, press and hold it, then press Delete.

To connect to a hidden WiFi network

A WiFi network might be hidden, which means the network name isn't broadcasted. In this case, it won't appear in the list of available networks on the WiFi Settings screen and a notification won't appear when the network is in range. To connect to a hidden WiFi network when it's in range, you'll need to enter the network name and password.

  1. On Start, flick left to the Application list, then press Settings Settings icon > WiFi.

  2. Make sure that WiFi networking is set to On Toggle control icon and then pressAdvanced.

  3. On the Advanced screen, press Add Add icon, type the network name in the Network name box and then press Add.

  4. On the Sign in screen, type the password in the Password box and then press Done.

Notes

  • The network name and password are case sensitive.
  • This feature might not work on your phone without a software update from your phone manufacturer.

To find the MAC address for your phone

If your WiFi network uses Media Access Control (MAC) address filtering for security, you'll need to know the MAC address for your phone and then add it to the access list for that network before you can connect.

  • On Start, flick left to the Application list, press Settings Settings icon > About > More info, then note the MAC address.
